Captioning for Live & Recorded Web Conferencing Sessions

Below is an overview of the captioning for live and recorded web sessions at NDSU.

As the need for virtual meetings, class sessions, and events continue to grow, so does the need to make those sessions accessible to everyone. Automated captioning and live transcription features are becoming more available in a variety of video and web conferencing platforms. Each platform differs in the way captions are integrated, enabled, and displayed.

Zoom

Zoom provides automatic captions when enabled by the meeting host and/or requested by a meeting participant. Automatically generated captions are displayed as subtitles at the bottom of the main window. For information from Zoom select Enabling and managing closed captioning and live transcription

YuJa

YuJa automatically adds captions and transcripts to all recordings shortly after they have been processed. YuJa's auto-captioning is reported to 80-90% accurate. This depends on how articulate the speaker is and the background noise. YuJa provides an Auto-Captioning Overview to help with additional options available for language, captioning, and editing.

To learn more about making corrections to the auto-captions that have been generated for your videos go to Editing Captions in the Video Editor.

Class Collaborate Ultra

Class Collaborate Ultra does not currently include automated live captioning. Captioning can be added by a manual captioner during live sessions and recordings. For more information on using this feature go to Captions in Collaborate.

Teams

Teams can provide automated real-time captioning during meetings. To turn on captions once a meeting has started:

  2. In the drop-down list select Turn on Captions
  3. Captions will appear at the bottom of the Teams window.
