- Log into NDSU.Zoom.us and/or log into Blackboard Learn at blackboard.ndus.edu
- Test your headset and camera to make sure you can see/hear the class and they can see/hear you.
- To test your headset and camera, just look at the Zoom window to see that you are clearly visible and your background is suitable (no offensive pictures, private with no distractions, etc). Video testing tips and Audio testing
- Close any extra applications, windows or programs not needed during the class session. This helps to provide the best Zoom meeting experience possible, and prevents potential embarrassing moments if you happen to share your screen.
During the Zoom Meeting
- Click Start or Join button for your Zoom Class Session.
- Based on your instructor preferences turn on or off your video. Some classes may require video on throughout class and some may prefer video off until you speak.
- Audio should normally be muted to provide a distraction-free class environment. When speaking unmute your microphone. You may want to Raise Your Hand using that feature in the Participant list window, or post your question in the Chat window before speaking.
- Click the Chat bubble to ask questions via text, share links to websites, and keep up with the class's discussion. You can chat to everyone in the meeting, just the instructor, or a specific person (private chats may be disabled by the instructor).
- Find out who else is in the meeting by clicking Participants. This is also where you can raise your hand to ask a question or answer a question.
- Be prepared to share your screen with the class. They can see the tabs you have open.
- At the end of the class, click Leave Meeting.
Zoom Etiquette and On-Camera Tips
- Video chatting in a professional setting is a new experience for many students. Here are some tips to help you look and feel good about the Zoom experience.
- Getting clear video is a lot like taking a good selfie -- it's all about contrast. Light your face more brightly than the background to make it easier to see you.
- Hold your head high in the picture frame. It conveys confidence.
- Keep your clothing clean and professional.
- Be yourself, move around and make, appropriate, facial expressions (smile, nod, laugh, just like in class).
- Post a profile picture to display when your camera is turned off. This helps everyone get to know you.
- Microphones pick up lots of background noise, so keep your mic muted until it's your time to speak.
- Remember, when the camera is on on, other activities such as eating, drinking, shuffling papers, can be extremely distracting.
Zoom can also be used for many things outside of class:
- Meet with group members for projects and assignments
- Work on homework with classmates
- Record a presentation
- Schedule online tutoring
- Host a meeting for a club or organization
What devices can I use Zoom on?
- Laptop/desktop computer (Windows/Mac) – recommended
- Tablet (Apple iOS, Android)
- Smartphone (Apple iOS, Android) – not recommended for class
