Faculty Certificate Courses and Exemplar Course Design Rubric

Instructional Design Center (IDC) offers opportunities for faculty to learn more about teaching and learning in a variety of self-paced, non-credit, certificate courses.

The IDC instructional design team developed three Faculty Certificate courses including an Exemplar Course Design Rubric.

These teaching and learning courses have been designed for asynchronous, self-paced learning. Also, if you are interested in taking the courses as a cohort with your colleagues, let us know. This option can provide a valuable learning experience by connecting and interacting with others. Courses will be facilitated by IDC instructional design staff providing help with questions and feedback, as needed.

Teaching with AI for Educators – Coming Soon! 

(4-6 hours, 3 modules, Cohort-based)   

This faculty certificate course is designed to introduce educators to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and its applications in higher education. Participants will explore the fundamentals of GenAI, develop skills in crafting effective prompts, and learn strategies to integrate GenAI tools into their teaching practices. 

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: 

  • Describe the basic concepts and functionalities of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). 
  • Develop and refine prompts to effectively utilize GenAI tools. 
  • Apply strategies to incorporate GenAI in designing and enhancing course materials, activities, and assessments.. 

To complete this course, participants will engage with a variety of learning materials and activities, including videos, readings, hands-on activities, discussions/reflections, quizzes, and practical exercises. 

Designing and Developing a Quality Course

This project-based course is designed to engage you with the fundamentals of quality course design. As an institution, we need to ensure quality and consistency in course design and the learning experiences we craft for our students.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Provide you with learning theories and framework foundations of course design
  • Explain the fundamental components of course design
  • Describe learning objectives, assessments, and feedback
  • Identify components of learner materials
  • Discuss strategies for learner interactions and support
  • Identify strategies for choosing the best course technology
  • Describe ways to assure and enhance quality course design

To assure the quality of our courses and course designs, we use an Exemplar Course Design Rubric. This rubric is grounded in research and scholarship and articulates the indicators and standards of quality in order to guide the development of new courses or review existing courses to recommend where improvements have the most impact.

Universal Design for Learning and Digital Accessibility

This faculty certificate course is designed to learn more about what Universal Design Learning (UDL) principles are, how to use them in designing learning experiences, and to ensure the course content is digitally accessible to ALL students. To successfully complete this course, we will engage with a variety of learning materials and activities (videos, readings, discussion/reflections, quizzes, and graphics).

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the principles of Universal Design Learning and how all students can benefit
  • Demonstrate the application of UDL guidelines in course materials and activities
  • Apply accessibility standards to course materials using digital tools including Blackboard Ally
