Safe Computing - Redact Sensitive Data from PDF Files

Below is a guide to removing sensitive data from PDF files using Adobe

Sensitive data is considered any data classified as Private or Restricted as defined by the North Dakota University System.

The directions below assume you have access to a version of Adobe that allows writing to PDF's such as Acrobat Pro, 

  1. Click Tools 
  2. Click Redact 
  3. This opens the redact toolset 
  4. Click Mark for Redaction 
  5. Click Find Text 
    1. Search for single or multiple instances of the phrase you wish to redact 
  6. Check the items you wish redacted 
  7. Click Mark Checked Results for Redaction 
  8. Click Apply 
  9. Click OK 
  10. Choose File 
  11. Click Save - specify a filename and save the document, if you choose a different file name, the original document will be unaltered.
