Protect Yourself and Others - Windows 10 and 11 Firewall Setup

Devices that connect to the Internet are under attack, there are hundreds of thousands of computers that are scanning the Internet every day, looking for open ports and ways to compromise and use those devices for their own use. The following are directions for enabling firewall rules that will allow you to determine what Internet connected devices are allowed to connect to your computer.

Windows 10, 11 Firewall - Prevent a connection to a certain port 

  1. Click the Start Button
  2. Type firewall
  3. Open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security
  4. Click Inbound Rules
  5. Expand the Window
  6. Click the words Local Port to sort the list
  7. Search through the list to see the port that you want to restrict Internet access to (i.e. 80 for Web Server or 1433 for ms-sql server)
  8. Double Click the rule that the port you have located corresponds to (If you have multiples, you will have to do this for each instance)
  9. In the General Tab click Block the connection in the Action section
  10. Click Apply 
  11. Click OK
  12. Close Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security window

Windows 10, 11 Firewall - Allow a connection to a certain port

  1. Click the Start Button
  2. Type firewall
  3. Open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security
  4. Click Inbound Rules
  5. Expand the Window
  6. Click the words Local Port to sort the list
  7. Search through the list to see the port that you want to restrict Internet access to (i.e. 80 for Web Server or 1433 for ms-sql server)
  8. Double Click the rule that the port you have located corresponds to (If you have multiples, you will have to do this for each instance)
  9. Open the Scope tab
    1. Under Remote IP address 
    2. Click Add...
    3. Enter the Specific IP address or Subnet or Range of IP addresses
    4. Click OK
  10. Click Apply 
  11. Click OK
  12. Close Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security window
