Emeritus Appointments

Policy and procedure for requesting emeritus title upon retirement.

NDSU Policy 361 addresses emeritus titles and appointments.

Emeritus Appointment Process

A department wishing to grant emeritus status to a faculty, senior administrator, or professional staff, writes a recommendation for emeritus status of an individual, which is sent to the unit's supervisor. For faculty, the recommendation from the department chair/head/director will need an additional recommendation from the dean of the college, who will then submit the request to the Office of the Provost at ndsu.provost@ndsu.edu.

In Academic Affairs, approved emeritus appointment letters are sent out from the Provost, with the effective date the same as the individual's date of retirement. Emeritus faculty and staff will continue to have access to NDSU email and the ability to continue collaborations and research, as determined by the home department.

Emeritus appointments have no end date.
