Three Searching for Excellence sessions are scheduled this fall, and anyone planning to chair an academic search must complete the training before a position is posted.

The Office of the Provost has scheduled three fall sessions of Search Committee Training, also known as Searching for Excellence. Registration is open now here. Academic Personnel Coordinator Angela Fowler can answer questions at angela.fowler@ndsu.edu or 1-7150.

Who Is Required to Attend

Anyone who plans to chair an academic search, including searches for faculty, lecturers, research scientists, administrators, and postdocs, is required to attend the training in its entirety within the three years before the position is posted. Sessions offered over Zoom count as in-person attendance. The training is also open and recommended to all search committee members.

Departments that are not hiring right now are encouraged to attend anyway so committees are ready when a search opens.

What the Training Covers

The session covers the procedural aspects of the search process. It also presents research-based information on the ways bias can influence the recruitment and screening of applicants, along with strategies for overcoming bias so that the best candidate is selected.
