New Federal Rule Sets a Fixed Admission Period for F and J Visas

A new Homeland Security rule replaces Duration of Status with a fixed period of admission for international students, and NDSU is reviewing the changes and supporting affected students.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security published new federal regulations this morning that change how F and J visa status is managed for international students in the United States. The rule includes a 60-day waiting period and a six-month transition period before it takes effect. NDSU is actively reviewing the changes and providing support to students in the meantime.

The new rule replaces the current Duration of Status (D/S) framework with a fixed period of admission. Beginning September 15, F and J visa holders will generally be admitted until the end date listed on their Form I-20 or DS-2019, or for a maximum of four years, whichever is shorter. Students who remain in legal status and need additional time to complete their academic programs may be eligible to request an extension through a new federal process.

The Office of Global Programs and Services continually monitors changes in federal policy and is conducting a thorough review of the final rule and its implementation.
