NDSU is hiring summer lifeguards and swim lesson instructors ages 15 and up, with free certification training provided for anyone who commits to the full summer.
Know someone who loves the water and wants a rewarding summer job? NDSU is hiring lifeguards and swim lesson instructors for the summer semester, and no prior experience is required.
All necessary training and certifications are provided at no cost (a $160 value) for applicants who commit to working the full summer. Candidates must be at least 15 years old, so the positions are open to high school students as well as college students and community members.

Swim Lesson Instructor
No lifeguard certification required.
Position focus: Teaching children swim lessons for the NDSU Swim Academy.
Reports to: Associate Director of Operations, Aquatics & Fitness.
Starting wage: $15.00 per hour. Additional summer incentives are available; email Ryan for details.
Certification: Provided free of charge with a summer commitment (normally $160).
Schedule:
- Monday through Thursday
- Morning shifts: 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
- Evening shifts: 4:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
- Three-day weekends and no lessons during the week of July 4
Position overview: Instructors are responsible for planning and teaching American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim and water safety courses for children ages 6 months to 17 years.
Lifeguard
Position focus: Ensuring a safe aquatic environment and responding to emergencies.
Reports to: Associate Director of Operations, Aquatics & Fitness.
Starting wage: $13.75 per hour. Additional summer incentives are available; email Ryan for details.
Certification: Provided free of charge with a summer commitment (normally $160).
Schedule:
- Flexible weekly hours
- Includes opening and closing shifts, weekends, and holidays
- Note: Aquatics hours differ from general building hours
Position overview: Lifeguards support aquatic operations by maintaining constant surveillance, enforcing safety policies, preventing hazards, and responding to emergencies.
