Congratulations to Dr. Suzzanne Kelley from NDSU Press, Jamee Larson from the NDSU English Department, and students Joe Frisinger, Sara Quiring, Caitlin Barnard, Eliza Janssen, Jade Maloney, Grant Hubbard, Yakira Johnson, Avery Wiese, and Grace Wolf.
Northern Eclecta: Legends from North Dakota State University, has been recognized as a SUPERIOR magazine by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
This year, schools in 44 states, Washington DC, and six countries nominated 456 student magazines. Magazines from middle school, high school, and higher education were welcomed for the 2025 contest.
“The student team worked conscientiously and diligently to produce the Legends issue of Northern Eclecta Volume 19,” says Dr. Suzzanne Kelley, temporary instructor for Literary Publications and editor in chief for North Dakota State University Press. “From soliciting and managing submissions that arrived from all over the United States, to selecting and copyediting every story, poem, and caption, they met deadlines and produced a beautiful volume.”
Student editor Caitlin Barnard writes, “One thing that really worked in our favor was the class collaboration. We all worked well together, and communication between [art, editorial, and marketing] teams was extensive. Everyone was willing to put in the effort to really push through challenges and get this edition published.”
Northern Eclecta is North Dakota State University’s annual art and literary journal and is dedicate to publishing divers and creative voices regardless of genre or background.
The REALM program publicly recognizes excellent literary magazines produced by students with the support of their teachers. REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate magazines.
