Respondus 4.0

Respondus 4.0 is a tool NDSU instructors can use to create and manage online tests at no cost.

Overview

Tests can be created offline using Microsoft Word or a plain text editor and then published to Blackboard courses using the Respondus 4.0 software. Respondus 4.0 also lets instructors print tests on paper or save them as Word or PDF files for offline use and provides other time-saving tools such as equation editors, web links, and multimedia functions.

Windows only - Free to all NDSU instructors and staff

NOTE: Respondus 4.0 is not the same as Respondus LockDown Browser.

Getting Started

  • Download and install the Respondus 4.0 software.
  • Launch the application from the Desktop, enter the license information (available on NDSU Software Downloads page)
  • Select Blackboard from the Current Personality: list.
  • Create a server connection to Blackboard - you'll use this connection each time to publish tests Blackboard courses.

Best Practices

  • Create test files offline using Microsoft Word first. See the Word Formatting Guide for Respondus for the format required for each question type.
  • Test titles, visual formatting, and explanatory information are not needed.
  • Click Import Questions on the Respondus 4.0 Start tab, then select the test file.
  • Click the Preview button in Import Questions to check for question issues in the Preview results pane at the bottom.
    • Cancel the import, open the test file outside of Respondus, make necessary format changes, save and close the file, then select Import Questions again.
    • Make sure all issues reported in the Preview results pane are fixed before you click Finish! This may take more than one try.
  • Use the Edit tab options to change, add or delete questions and set question options.
  • Preview the questions in Respondus before publishing them to Blackboard to make sure they work correctly.
  • Click Preview + Publish to connect to Blackboard and publish the test.
  • Open Blackboard to make changes and make the test available to students.
