For travelers to US embargoed countries
Including: Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, and four regions of Ukraine (Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Sevastopol).
During travel to these areas, you will be unable to log in with Duo. You are required to uninstall the Duo Mobile app, required to leave Duo hardware tokens at home, and will be unable to access any NDSU services protected by Duo. DUO is considered an encryption item and subject to U.S. export control regulations.
If you try to use a Duo-protected service in these areas, you will get an error message that reads, Access denied. Duo Security does not provide services in your current location in the Duo Prompt. For more information and the most up to date list of restricted areas, please refer to Duo's website.
For all other international travelers
Using Duo in China
China is not an embargoed country, however, China may block or restrict the use of DUO. Some workarounds exist and can be found on the DUO website.
Travel to other countries
If you will have access to Wi-Fi and cellular service with data, you can use the same method(s) you normally use. These methods all work overseas when your device has a data connection:
- Push notifications
- Mobile passcodes
- SMS passcodes
- Phone callback
- Hardware tokens
These methods will still work even if you can't connect to any cellular or data service:
Do SMS passcodes and phone callback work with international numbers?
Yes, they do! You can register an international number with Duo, just like a US number.
Contact the Export Control office with questions or to check whether a license exception is available for the specific country you will be visiting.
