Wireless - Eduroam

Eduroam, or education roaming, is the primary NDSU wireless network. Students, faculty and staff should connect their laptops, smartphones, tablets and other wireless-only devices to eduroam, if possible.

Overview

NDSU is a participating member of eduroam, which is a global Internet access service. It allows NDSU students, faculty and staff to connect to secure wireless Internet on NDSU's campus and, without any additional setup, at other educational institutions around the world that are part of the eduroam network. Guests from those other institutions can similarly connect to wireless on NDSU's campus without any additional setup. View a map of participating institutions.
Benefits include:
  • Robust wireless infrastructure
  • One-time setup per device
  • Available in all main campus buildings, the downtown campus, and at two outdoor locations
  • Able to connect to eduroam wireless at any other participating institution with no additional setup

Frequently Asked Questions

Who may use eduroam?

Eduroam is available to current NDSU students, faculty and staff, and it is available to guests who have set up their devices to connect to eduroam at other participating institutions.

What devices can connect to eduroam?

Most laptops, smartphones and tablets can connect to eduroam. Other devices may connect on a case-by-case basis. For a device to be able to connect to eduroam, it must support WPA2 Enterprise authentication. Commonly used devices that cannot connect to eduroam include game consoles, smart TVs, printers, Chromecasts, and Rokus. For devices with Ethernet jacks, we recommend using a wired connection for a faster, more stable connection.
For devices in the Residence Halls that cannot connect via eduroam or a wired Ethernet connection, please see Wireless Internet of Things (IoT) for connection information.

Data Security

Eduroam may be used to access public, private and restricted data, as defined by North Dakota University System Data Classification Standards. All NDSU students, faculty and staff are responsible for protecting private and restricted data, including data subject to export control regulations, FERPA, PCI and other pertinent state and federal laws and industry regulations. Keep your devices up to date, including operating systems and applications, and make sure your devices are protected with anti-malware before connecting to any wireless network. Contact the NDSU information security office if you have questions or concerns.
