Microsoft Windows 11

This document outlines NDSU IT's support standards and the minimum system requirements for Microsoft Windows 11.

Product Information

Microsoft Windows 11 was released on October 5, 2021. NDSU IT supports Windows 11 on university-managed computers and has tested the operating system with core institutional applications to ensure compatibility. Windows 11 is the standard operating system for NDSU-managed Windows devices and computer labs.

Recommendation

NDSU IT supports Microsoft Windows 11 on all eligible, university-managed computers.

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. NDSU IT recommends that all supported computers run Windows 11 to continue receiving security updates and support.

Some older computers may not meet Microsoft's hardware requirements for Windows 11, including requirements for supported processors, Secure Boot, and TPM 2.0. Please consult your computer manufacturer for specific compatibility information.

As with any major operating system upgrade, users should back up important files before performing an upgrade.

 

System Requirements

Microsoft has listed the following system requirements for Windows 11.

Processor 1 gigahertz (GHz)orfaster with 2 or more cores on acompatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC).
RAM 4 gigabyte (GB).
Storage 64 GB or larger storage device
System firmware UEFI, Secure Boot capable
TPM Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.
Graphics card Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver.
Display High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9 diagonally, 8 bits per color channel.
Internet connection For all Windows 11 editions, internet access is required to perform updates and to download and take advantage of some features. A Microsoft account is required for some features.
