Request for Internal Applications: Undergraduate Research Director

The Undergraduate Research Director will develop campus-wide undergraduate research and creative initiatives as well as manage undergraduate research programs in the Research and Creative Activity Office. Activities and programs to be developed may include creating programs to grow and enhance undergraduate research experiences, increasing understanding of undergraduate research impacts on student learning and success, providing professional development opportunities for undergraduate research students, and serving as a resource for faculty on student mentorship and proposal development to increase undergraduate research funding and broader impacts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify, create, and promote mentored research opportunities for undergraduate students.
  • Manage RCA grants that support undergraduate research, including a summer undergraduate research program (example: NIH INBRE).
  • Cultivate and maintain strategic partnerships with applicable campus offices.
  • Represent undergraduate research on campus and participate in campus activities: Discover NDSU, Classroom visits, Student Organizations, etc.
  • Develop programs, which may include:
    • Symposia and / or Professional Development seminars and workshops
    • Mentoring Programs
    • Develop resources for UR program proposals (NSF REU, USDA REEU, etc).
  • Serve as lead for NDSU EXPLORE annual research showcase event at Student Research Days.

APPOINTMENT

  • The anticipated start date is September 21, 2026.
  • The Office of Research and Creative Activity will work with the successful candidate and their unit head to provide support equivalent to a course release and one-month summer salary.
  • The appointment will be for two years, with an option to extend up to one additional year.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Current NDSU Employee.
  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in any academic field that requires research, scholarship, and/or creative work.
  • Faculty appointment that includes both teaching and research.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Minimum:

  • Leadership experience in a collegiate environment.
  • Experience in research mentoring and instruction.
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of the nature of research in multiple disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain collaborative and effective work relations with faculty, staff, administration, and students.

Preferred:

  • Experience developing, managing, and/or evaluating undergraduate research programs.
  • Track record of peer-reviewed scholarship on undergraduate research.
  • Grant management experience.
