Institutional Biosafety Committee

The NDSU Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) assures the safe use of recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids, infectious agents, human blood, bodily fluids, and tissues, and maintains compliance with federal regulations and University policies.

Pathogens and recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids have the potential to endanger the health of people and animals in laboratories and in society. The federal government requires that all institutions receiving federal funding appoint a committee to review the proposed use of these agents.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has established guidelines for institutions involved with recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids research to assist in protecting human health and the environment. It is the responsibility of each institution to ensure that all such activities conducted at or sponsored by the institution comply with the NIH guidelines.

North Dakota State University has established a biosafety policy (NDSU Policy 347) and procedures in accordance with the NIH Guidelines to ensure safe use of recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids by NDSU investigators. In addition, the NDSU IBC, in collaboration with the Office of Safety and Environmental Health, approves and oversees all activities using infectious agents, human blood, bodily fluids, and tissues.
