Central File Services - Windows Instructions
Instructions for using Central File Services using Windows.
Windows - On Campus
- Open the Start Menu by right-clicking on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your screen
- Left click on File Explorer
- On the left side of the window, right click on This PC and left click on the option Map Network Drive.
- For Windows 11, right click on This PC, select Show More Options, then click Map Network Drive
- Select the letter you want to use for your drive from the drop down menu. Then, in the folder field, enter the drive path where your folders are located:
Drive Drive Path S: (department shared) \\AD.NDSU.EDU\SHARED U: (personal user drive) \\AD.NDSU.EDU\HOME\firstname.lastname X: (cross-department shared) \\file05.ad.ndsu.edu\file05volk - If you want the drive to appear automatically every time you log in to your computer, check the box next to Reconnect at logon.
- Click Finish.
- If prompted for credentials, enter your firstname.lastname@ndsu.edu and the password associated with your NDSU electronic-ID.
- (NOTE: If login fails, use firstname.lastname@ad.ndsu.edu instead.)
- Check the box next to Remember my credentials if you want the drive to appear automatically every time you log in to your computer and do not want to be prompted for your credentials again.
- The drive you created should now appear under This PC.
Windows - Off Campus
- Right click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen and select File Explorer
- Right click on This PC, and choose Map network drive
- For Windows 11, right click on This PC, select Show More Options, then click Map Network Drive
- Select the letter you want to use for your drive from the drop down menu, and then enter the drive path:
- Note: If you connect to your drive from the same laptop computer both on campus and off, consider choosing an alternative letter for your off-campus connection (e.g., T: for department shared, V: for personal user drive, and Z: for cross-department shared). This will prevent your off-campus mapping from interfering with your on-campus settings.

Path for Personal User Drive: https://webd01.ad.ndsu.edu/home
Path for Cross-Department Shared Drive: https://webd01.ad.ndsu.edu/global - In the folder field, enter the drive path where your folders are located.
- Make sure the box is NOT checked next to Reconnect at logon.
- Click Finish
- When prompted for credentials, enter your firstname.lastname@ndsu.edu and the password associated with your NDSU electronic-ID.
- (NOTE: If login fails, use firstname.lastname@ad.ndsu.edu instead.)
- Make sure the box next is NOT checked next to Remember my credentials.
- The drive you created should now appear under Computer.
