Wireless - Internet of Things (IoT)

The NDSU IoT network is designed for devices that must connect wirelessly, but are not compatible with the preferred method of connecting to the eduroam network. Devices that can be connected to the wired network via an Ethernet cable will benefit from a more stable connection. Opting for a wired connection when possible also will free up shared wireless bandwidth, allowing for better experiences for devices that can only connect via wireless.

Getting Started

Connecting a device

  1. On a computer or smartphone, go to https://apps.ndsu.edu/accounts/
  2. Click Log in under the Manage Account heading
  3. Log in using your Bison Login credentials
  4. Click on NDSU IoT Registration in the left column under the Device Management heading
  5. Follow the instructions on the page to register your device
  6. Your password will generate once you have a device registered
  7. Refresh the page
  8. Click the Show button next to Step 5 to see your password
  9. You will be able to connect your device to the NDSU IoT network with the password once the Status column for the device changes to Success

Removing a device

  1. On a computer or smartphone, go to https://apps.ndsu.edu/accounts/
  2. Click Log in under the Manage Account heading
  3. Log in using your Bison Login and credentials
  4. Click on NDSU IoT Registration in the left column under the Device Management heading
  5. Under Active Devices, find the device you want to remove
  6. Click Disable Device in the corresponding row
  7. Click Yes to confirm removal

Changing your password for the NDSU IoT network

  1. On a computer or smartphone, go to https://apps.ndsu.edu/accounts/
  2. Click Log in under the Manage Account heading
  3. Log in using your Bison Login credentials
  4. Click on NDSU IoT Registration in the left column under the Device Management heading
  5. Click the Generate new password
  6. Click the Show button next to Step 5 to see your password
  7. The new password will need to be entered on all registered devices you have connected to the NDSU IoT network

MAC Address Information

What is a MAC address

  • A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a 12-character, alpha-numeric address that is unique to each device and is used to connect the device to the network
  • It may also be referred to as a Physical Address, Hardware Address, WiFi Address, etc.
  • The MAC address will likely be printed or displayed in one of the following formats:
    • 12:34:56:78:90:AB
    • 12-34-56-78-90-AB
    • 1234567890AB

How do I find my MAC address

  1. Look for the MAC address printed on the device itself, usually near the serial number
  2. Search in Google for Find my MAC address device type, replacing device type with the device, such as Roku Premiere, or
  3. Refer to the device manual or manufacturer's website for instructions on how to find the MAC address for your device

Data Security

The NDSU IoT Network may be used to transfer public data, as defined by North Dakota University System Data Classification Standards. Because this is a shared network, we do not recommend connecting unprotected devices (i.e., devices that can be accessed without a password) to NDSU IoT. All NDSU students, faculty and staff are responsible for protecting private and restricted data, including data subject to export control regulations, FERPA, PCI and other pertinent state and federal laws and industry regulations. Keep your device up to date, including the operating system and applications, before connecting to any wireless network. Contact the NDSU information security office if you have questions or concerns.
