Strategies for writing effective test questions

Description/overview

Online tests are (generally) easy to assign, students to take, and automatically score. The harder part is creating the online test. Good and effective questions can be a challenge to develop. This workshop provides strategies, resources, and practice for designing questions that are fair, unambiguous, appropriate and are aligned with the course/unit objectives.

Create effective online test questions, aligned with course/unit objectives.

  • Describe the advantage/disadvantages of multiple-choice questions
  • Contrast the properties of good vs poor questions
  • Identify components of multiple-choice questions
  • Draft lower and higher order thinking multiple-choice questions
