Microsoft Teams - Chat

Chat is the center feature of Microsoft Teams. Users can chat individually, in groups and in team channels. Below is an overview and helpful resources for using the chat feature of Microsoft Teams.

Start a Chat in Teams

  1. Make sure you are in the 'Chat' tab on the left-hand side
  2. Click the New Chat New chat icon button at the top of your chat list to start a chat
  3. Enter the names of the people you would like to send a message to
    • To add a group name to the chat, select the down arrow to the far right of the To field and type the name for the chat in the Group name field
  4. Compose your message in the box at the bottom of the chat
  5. When you are ready to send your message, click the send arrow

Start a Video Call in Chat

  1. Ensure that you are in the chat/group chat you want to video or voice call
  2. Click the video button in the top right corner of the chat
  3. The other members of the chat will receive a notification asking them to accept your video call.
  4. When you are done with your video call, select Leave to end the call.
    • Selecting leave will not end the call for other participants if there are more than two people in the call.

Pin a Chat

Frequent or important conversations can be pinned to the top of your chat list. To do so, follow these instructions:
  1. Select Chat to open the chat list
  2. Find the name of the conversation you want to join
  3. Select More Options (the three dots) then select Pin

Hide a Chat

  1. Select Chat to open the chat list
  2. Find the name of the conversation you want hide
  3. Select More Options (the three dots) then select Hide

Unhide a Chat

  1. In the Search box at the top, type a word or phrase that's included in the chat that you want to unhide (such as the sender or a participant's name)
  2. Choose the hidden chat that you want to unhide, and then select Chat in the left toolbar. The chat will appear in the Chat feed again
  3. In the chat, select More Options (the three dots) then select Unhide
