Departmental Printing - Securing Your Network Printer

IT recommends that you secure your network printers by implementing these best practices.

The first step is to request a permanent network address for the printer: Departmental Printing - Request Printer Network Address 

Once you have the address, you will need to set the following settings: (These are the most common settings that can be configured to secure your printer, these configurations may vary per make and model of printer)

Devices connecting to the NDSU Network must follow the Zero Trust model of network security:

  • Device Password:
  • Administrator Password:
  • Supervisor Password:
  • PJL Password:
  • File System Password:
  • System Contact System Location - Set to Building/Room (eg QBB 236)
  • Telnet. Disable
  • IPX/SPX . Disable
  • AppleTalk . Disable
  • DLC/LLC . Disable
  • SNMP . Set the “Set Community Name” & the “Get Community Name” to something other than "Public"
  • SLP Config . Disable
  • Bonjour . Disable
  • FTP Printing . Disable
  • IPP Printing . Disable
  • HP XML Services . Disable
  • Multicast IPv4 . Disable
  • Web Services Print . Disable
  • WS-Discovery . Disable
  • RCFG . Disable
  • Privacy Settings . Disable “Allow product information to be sent to HP”
  • Encryption Strength . Set to High & Encrypt all Web communication
