Respondus 4.0 - Connect to Blackboard Original

Use the instructions below to create a connection between Respondus and Blackboard Original.

You must create a connection to the NDUS Blackboard server after installing the software to upload tests to Blackboard Original or to retrieve test data from Blackboard Original. This connection only needs to be created once!

Update Respondus 4.0 to the Latest Version

  1. Open Respondus 4.0.
  2. Click Help > Check for Update.
  3. If an update is indicated > click Get Update.

Open a Respondus File

A Respondus file must be open before you can connect to the server or publish a test to a Blackboard Original course.

  1. Click the Start tab at the top > click Open or Create on the left, if not selected already.
  2. Click Open.
  3. Select any existing Respondus file > click Open.

Create the Connection

Note: Recent changes to Blackboard Original and the NDUS authentication system have changed the process needed to connect to the Blackboard server - please follow these steps:
  1. Click the Preview + Publish tab at the top > click Publish on the left > click Publish Wizard.
  2. Leave "Publish to single course" selected.
  3. Blackboard Server: Select - add new server from the drop-down list.
  4. Leave "Yes, check for preconfigured server settings" selected > click Next.
  5. Enter a descriptive name (ex: NDSU Bb) > leave "Run connection test" selected > click Next.
Note: Check the “Save my User Name and Password” option ONLY if you don’t share this computer with other users.

  6. Click OK when you see this Respondus message box - this is not an error message:

Log into Blackboard using the browser window, then close the window and click OK to continue

  7. If you see this "Authentication Module Download" message > click OK.

An additional authentication module is required for your server. Select OK to continue to download the module now

  8. Important: WAIT for a generic browser window with the Blackboard login screen to appear - this may take a few seconds.
  9. Click OK to accept the "Privacy, cookies and terms of use", if prompted.
  10. Click My Bb Login > enter your NDUS username and password, as usual.
  11. Once logged in to Blackboard Original > click "Close After Login" in the top-right corner of the browser window - do not click on anything else in this window!

Cancel and Close After Login buttons

  12. Click OK again to dismiss the Respondus message box.
  13. Click Next.
  14. Click Finish.
  15. Click Cancel > close Respondus

Note: You will use this Blackboard connection each time you publish a test to Blackboard Original or retrieve test data from Blackboard Original. You will not be prompted to install the Authentication Module Download again.
