PTAs Teaching Graduate Courses

How departments can get a PTA approved to serve as instructor of record for a graduate course, either through a graduate teaching waiver or through Affiliate Graduate Faculty status (Level 2 or 3).
Guidance for Departments on Teaching Waivers and Affiliate Graduate Faculty Status

A PTA may serve as instructor of record for a graduate course (600 level or above) only with graduate faculty status or an approved graduate teaching waiver. Start with the "Use when" row to choose the right route.

Use when

The PTA will teach a graduate course once or twice.

Or: The PTA will teach graduate courses on an ongoing basis but holds a degree below the level of the course. Each waiver lasts one academic year and may be renewed up to two times at the Graduate Dean's discretion; contact the Graduate School about longer-term options.

The PTA will teach graduate courses on an ongoing basis and holds a degree at or above the level of the program.

Level 2: The PTA holds a terminal degree and has a record of scholarly or creative work.

Level 3: The PTA's background is professional practice rather than scholarship, such as a practitioner with a master's degree teaching in a master's program.

What it allows

Serving as instructor of record for a specific graduate course only. Does not confer any of the other privileges of graduate faculty status, such as serving on or chairing graduate committees.

Level 2: Teaching graduate courses and chairing master's committees.

Level 3: Teaching graduate courses and chairing committees for students not required to complete a dissertation, thesis, or scholarly paper, at a level no higher than the PTA's earned degree.

Qualifications

Granted sparingly, mostly for electives or applied and professional courses where a practitioner's experience adds value.

Level 2: Terminal degree and a record of scholarly or creative work.

Level 3: Record of professional achievement and teaching competence.

Term

One academic year. May be renewed twice at the Graduate Dean's discretion, for a maximum of three years.

Three years. May be renewed by the department chair through the same nomination process.

What to submit

Include with the request:

  • The PTA's current CV
  • A statement explaining why this person is the best choice for the course and why no full-time faculty member is available to teach it

Include with the request:

  • The PTA's current CV or resume
  • The proposed level (2 or 3)
  • Signatures from the department chair and college dean

Who approves

Graduate Council and the Graduate Dean

A Graduate Council subcommittee reviews and recommends; the Graduate Dean makes the final decision.

Timing

Submit the request well before the semester begins. Do not list the PTA as instructor of record until approval is granted.
