Student Employment - CCAST Intern for Weather Station IoT Project

CCAST Internship Program in Advanced Research Computing

The NDSU Center for Computationally Assisted Science and Technology (CCAST), Information Technology Division, is seeking undergraduate students in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) to work on a weather station IoT project – and ongoing, NSF-funded project in collaboration with the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC).

Students in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) beginning their Junior or Senior year in Fall 2022 are eligible to apply. Exceptional Sophomore students may also be considered. The tentative start date for this position is April 18 and is expected to continue through Summer 2022. The position may be renewed for Fall 2022/Spring 2023, depending on continuance of funding.

Hours Per Week: 10-20 in Spring/Fall, up to 40 in Summer
Starting Wage: $18.50/hour
Reports To: CCAST Staff

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, program, and debug 3D-printed weather stations.
  • Test and calibrate environmental sensors.
  • Document assembly and operation of weather stations for training and education purposes.
  • Work with NDSU Digital Fabrication Lab to improve design of 3D printed parts.
  • Integrate data from weather stations with CCAST systems and cloud, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A full-time NDSU undergraduate student in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)
  • Experience programming in one or more languages (C/C++, Python, Java, or others)
  • Basic knowledge of the Linux operating system, especially the Raspberry Pi platform
  • Experience working with electronics – wiring, soldering, debugging sensors, etc.
  • Good communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills; ability to write clear user instructions and develop tutorials and training materials
  • Self-motivation, strong willingness to learn, and strong problem-solving skills
