Safe Computing - Set a Time limit on Remote Desktop Sessions
Remote Desktop Sessions by default in Windows can remain open even if nothing is happening on the computer. This could lead to a compromise or make a compromised computer even more dangerous.
The following directions will allow you to make sure that the Remote Desktop sessions timeout in an idle session.
- Click the Start button
- Type "gpedit" (No Quotes) hit Enter
- Select Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Service > Remote Desktop Session Host > Session Time Limits
- Double-Click Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions
- Select Enabled
- Use the Drop Down box to select 30 minutes
- Click Apply
- Click OK
- Double-Click Set time limit for disconnected sessions
- Select Enabled
- Use the Drop Down box to select 30 minutes
- Click Apply
- Click OK
- (Optional) Double-Click Set time limit for active Remote Desktop Services sessions (If there is a need to limit the time an active Remote Desktop session is needed)
- Select Enabled
- Use the Drop Down box to select 30 minutes
- Click Apply
- Click OK
- Double-Click End session when time limits are reached
- Select Enabled
- Click Apply
- Click OK
- Close the Group Policy Editor
- Reboot Computer
