Across the country, regional technology networks serve as arms of the national Research & Education (R&E) technology network interoperating to form a larger whole, the U.S. national R&E network and backbone, Internet2.

Overview

As a member-owned organization, the mission of Internet2 is to operate an advanced technology network intended for research and academic activities of its membership. Internet2 operates the nation's largest and fastest coast-to-coast research and education network, providing its community with a secure high-speed network, cloud solutions, research support, and services tailored for research and education. 

Internet2 serves more than 320 higher education members, 60 affiliate and government members, and 46 regional and state networks, and through them supports more than 80,000 community anchor institutions, over 1,000 InCommon higher education, research and corporate participants, over 950 eduroam subscribers, more than 350 university Net+ subscribers and more than 750 Net+ cloud contracts, over 50 industry members, and more than 100 countries and global research network connections. The technology that creates regional networks and the larger interoperable network fabric encircling the globe is the foundation for distributed education and research activities across the higher education and research community.

Requirements

Access to R&E resources and partner organizations in the U.S. and globally requires a campus connection to the North Dakota State Technology Access for Government and Education network (STAGEnet). All state agencies, colleges and universities, local government, and K-12 are required to participate in STAGEnet.
