CCAST Internship Program in Advanced Research Computing

The NDSU Center for Computationally Assisted Science and Technology (CCAST), Information Technology Division, is seeking students to join our Internship Program in Advanced Research Computing. Student interns in the systems-facing track will work on projects related to deployment, configuration, and maintenance of high-performance computing (HPC) Linux systems. 

Undergraduate and graduate students who are in good standing and possess the required qualifications and experience will be considered. We offer training and professional development opportunities for our interns.

Hours Per Week: 10-20 in Spring/Fall, up to 40 in Summer
Starting Wage: $17/hour or higher, commensurate with experience
Reports To: CCAST Staff

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Server and other hardware installation
  • TCP/IP networking
  • Linux operating systems configuration
  • Development of software on physical and virtual systems
  • Development of new systems-related software
  • Performing other tasks assigned by the CCAST staff

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A full-time NDSU student
  • Experience programming in one or more languages (Perl, Python, C/C++, Java, or others)
  • Basic experience working in a UNIX/Linux operating system
  • Good communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills; ability to write clear user instructions and develop tutorials and training materials
  • Self-motivation, strong willingness to learn, and strong problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience scripting or automating tasks in UNIX/Linux environments using Bash, Perl, or Python
  • System administration skills, including networking, virtualization, building software, deploying and maintaining web applications, etc.
  • Comfortable working in the Bash terminal
